I know, but imagine being born, living and dying in the same bra when it’s not even part of your biological body 😧
Also in the original movie we just see around four days of story, meaning that the fashion presented is not fixed for everyone forever (or I hope so).

I love how Ariel’s hair is pulled up in a different style and she’s wearing a different colored bra. Also, Flounder is so cute.
Interestingly, although I’m the first to openly accuse Ariel of being a mess in many aspects, I don’t see her as a snitch at all. She knows better than anyone what it’s like to carry big secrets, and I doubt she would play daddy’s little girl just for the pleasure of doing so, without having a significant reason 😁
She always has had that skintone in this comic since years ago. Doesn’t have a particular reason except she being already sun-kissed in the original movie (not the bleached digital restorations that practically turned her eyes from dark blue to turquoise). Triton is already darker than her as well.
They haven’t changed his race. As stated by others, he’s always been more tanned in all animated movies.
Even though Atlantica belongs to a separate world in this story, the original Disney movie was inspired by North Mediterranean countries. Look up what Greek and Italian people look like. They usually have this complexion.
Uh oh. Conflict!
So strange to see them all in different bra colors.
Yeah, but it’s also refreshing. Mermaids wear different outfits too.

I know right? She’s so 80s coded!
Funny, I nearly expected Ariel to spot them kissing and report them to daddy, Harmonia-style.
Can’t wait to see where this is going.

Why is Ariel’s skin so tan?
It’s probably because she visits the surface so often, she’s more exposed to the sun.

Aww! But Flounder doesn’t have a dangerous bone in his body!
I think Arista was being sarcastic about Flounder being dangerous.
Nice detail that Ariel is tan from constantly going to the surface all the time.
It’s not so much because of that, it’s simply her skin tone. Her father is even darker than her without getting out of the water 🙂
We’re blackwashing Triton now?
More like he’s consistently been much darker (or tanned, if “darker” is offensive to you) than all his daughters by a significant margin since 1989 😑
Triton has always been noticeably darker than most characters in The Little Mermaid, just take a look at these cels

Triton’s always had a naturally deep tan, he’s a lot tanner than Eric for example, it was the trend of the 80s after all
