Not unlike many real life religions. It’s an interesting perspective told through mermaids!

Something tells me that Arista can’t be the first person to ever defy the sacred texts by trying to touch the forbidden flower.

I feel really bad for both Ariel and Arista here. There was an earlier comment in chapter saying it’s no wonder Ariel left for the human world because of how she was treated in the sea. And they’re right! And poor Arista, religious trauma is no joke (speaking from experience)
I just read on Tumblr that the religious trauma wasn’t going to be present in the first version of this chapter. I’m glad it ended up being included because I can also relate to it.
These sacred texts of the Goddess seem rather strict. Don’t do this, or you’ll be cursed and never seen as equal to the Goddess again.

It was important, yes 😁
(to Ariel): “Ever the curious mermaid.”
