I knew we were closer to the drama. Poor Arista’s been helping Ursula all along, without even realizing it.

This is interesting. I feel that despite being under Harmonia’s influence, Triton still has a protective instinct toward Ursula, even as the years go by. Attina is logical in her observations, there is nothing to gain from letting people visit Ursula freely, but Triton seems completely closed off to making a definitive decision about her.
And now, Arista has finally figured out what all of Tristan’s materials were for, though sadly, she’s done it in the worst possible way.

That’s my impression as well. Hopefully, Triton’s motivations are explained in this chapter.

I can only imagine how much the drama is going to ramp up once the start of the actual movie takes place (Ariel visiting Ursula). I wonder if Arista’s own visit to Ursula is going to be a throwback to the sisters of the original story.

I totally would’ve snagged Triton from Ursula too, he’s just so hot! It’s wild how Triton, after all this time, still lets Ursula do whatever she wants (within her limits). She’s a real danger to the people of the sea, but he doesn’t seem to want to do anything about it; maybe he still has feelings for her. Poor Arista, but we all knew this would happen!
If it makes you feel better u are not alone on the triton train, what a man

The more this comic is developed, the more I realize how many plot holes The Little Mermaid actually has. I’m speechless.

I love the references to Taz and Tedrick from the 90s Little Mermaid books. That’s such a nostalgic reference especially since I particularly loved the book with those two cousins fighting over Attina.
Also Aquata is not forgiven for her shade towards Flounder lol.
I figured nobody else would recognize them since no comments identified them and I haven’t met anyone online who read these books either. They’re a novel series that came out before the TV show debuted. But a few things from the TV show seemed inspired from these novels. There’s a blonde character Pearl in the first book whose appearance and name may have inspired the TV show Pearl character. Eel-Ectric City from the show (one of the episodes featuring Ariel, Alana, and Pearl) also came from the books first.
They’re actually really fun reads because they gave all the sisters different personalities and focused on them as well as Ariel. Aquata was the eldest and most responsible but also liked theater. Andrina is the tomboy of the family. Into sports and also a practical joker who is never serious. Arista was sort of a toned-down Ariel. Rebellious and the first to have a forbidden romance with a stableboy while having a passion for riding seahorses. Attina was the bookworm and very shy. Loves to read and write. Adella was very vain and selfish. Loves to look beautiful and has a crush on a different guy in every book. Also loved to eat a lot. Finally Alana was closest to the Little Mermaid from the original fairy tale. Very sweet and sensitive and a dreamer. Loves animals and being alone in her garden with animals, while dreaming of love.
A little more information on those novels. They took inspiration from a book called Tales from Under the Sea. It was a book on TLM that featured short stories and poems for all the characters. You can see illustrations in the below link. https://cbl.orcein.net/thelittlemermaid/gallery/books1.htm
So the sisters’ personalities were more or less established in this book first and the novels basically took those personalities. For example, Adella is vain in this and obsessed with beauty. Arista loves to ride wild sea horses and break her father’s rules (although she’s more discreet than Ariel about it). All of that was established in this book’s short stories so I liked how the novels didn’t retcon that but built on it.
The fifth illustration in that link features a black-haired merman with a blue tail. His name is Gil. He also pops up in the novels as one of Ariel’s school friends.
The second-to-last illustration features a blonde merman with a purple tail. He’s actually Ariel’s cousin. He falls in love with a human girl. She makes a deal with Ursula to go underwater but Ursula tricks her by turning her into a sunken ship’s figurehead instead of a mermaid. I don’t think they appear in the novels.
This book also had an interesting origin for Triton and Ursula. Ursula ruled Atlantica as an evil tyrant. Triton was a young merboy when he stole the trident and used it to banish Ursula into a cave. As a reward for defeating Ursula, Triton was crowned king by the people. Ursula remains trapped in that cave for years. That day is celebrated every year by the merpeople as their independence day.
I really hope that poor human girl got her actual wish granted later on and wasn’t stuck as a ship figurehead the rest of her life. That would be awful.
Someone actually made fan art of the two on Deviantart and mentions more of the story. I think in the end, the human girl got to be a mermaid so yeah, happy ending.
I had no idea these two were from the book series. Love how they’re going deep into the lesser known franchise characters. I do recall reading one of those books at one point. It was the one with Pearl.
The Pearl one is the first book. From what I remember, that book was more Ariel-centric and didn’t focus much on the rest of the sisters.
I’m excited now because I’m wondering how many other rare Disney characters who I’m not familiar with will show up. Will any of us even recognize certain characters later?
The one that I was always proud of was recognizing that the design used for Goldilocks came from a fairly obscure MGM short from 1939 which despite being animated at MGM, was created at Disney.
I’ve only seen that short once. I think it’s actually up on YouTube. It’s a really cute and pretty design for Goldilocks but MGM’s three bears shorts (there were actually a few of them) were rather boring to me. I preferred Chuck Jones’ dysfunctional version of the three bears. I’m a classic Looney Tunes fan myself.
Yet it’s probably hidden. He has no idea he was tricked but there’s that unknown feeling in the back of his mind that wasn’t fully affected by her spell.
Even though we know it this all (kinda) plays out, it still feels intense!

Well, thanks to White Phoenix, I’m now aware that Taz and Tedrick were actually from the chapter book series and not just exclusive characters for this comic. I wonder what Taz wanted so badly that he needed to seek Ursula out. Although, I must be honest here, what kind of a name is Taz for a merman? All I can think of is the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Tunes!🤣
I knew we were closer to the drama. Poor Arista’s been helping Ursula all along, without even realizing it.

Why did someone give my comment a thumbs down? I didn’t say anything bad; that’s weird 😕

Really? 😮 I thought those characters were made up by the authors, I had no idea they were made by Disney

You can find more info on each of the books here. Book #10 features Tedrick and Taz on the cover so you can recognize Tedrick from there (he’s the one carrying flowers).

Thank you! I don’t think those books ever made to France!
Yeah, they weren’t really published in my country either. @White Phoenix thank you for the thorough explanation 😊
You’re welcome, both of you. I actually had to find all the books online from Amazon as used copies to read them. They’re not very common.
Wow! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of these novels until now! 😮

Don’t worry, Ariel and her cousin end up saving the human girl he’s in love with, although I don’t remember the full details.
Someone actually made fan art of the two on Deviantart and mentions more of the story. I think in the end, the human girl got to be a mermaid so yeah, happy ending.
Thank you so much for sharing this!

That is impressive. That Goldilocks short was completely new to me so I didn’t recognize her at all.
I’ve only seen that short once. I think it’s actually up on YouTube. He probably feels guilty for being tricked/used as Harmonia’s puppet. 🙁
Yet it’s probably hidden. He has no idea he was tricked but there’s that unknown feeling in the back of his mind that wasn’t fully affected by her spell.
Right. 🙁
I hadn’t realized you were talking about Triton until now, and you may be right
I wish I weren’t. 🙁
Even though we know it this all (kinda) plays out, it still feels intense!

Lol I don’t think the writers of the book series were very inventive with names. Arista’s stable boy boyfriend had the name of Dylan, for example.
Dylan definitely does not seem like a merfolk name.
Dylan means “of the sea” so technically it could work
Okay, I stand corrected!
I know Attina is never going to get married, but is she dating Tedrick right now?
They just look like friends to me
I keep coming back to this page to admire Attina’s design. It would make an amazing doll.
