Oh Ariel. I think the Duchess already knows everything.

I always wanted to see the Enchantress in this comic. However, I’m distrustful of anyone masquerading as an old hag in this comic. We already found out that Quetzal was really Grimhilde’s witch form visiting Aurora so I wonder if this is really the Enchantress or someone else pretending to be her. Maybe we’ll learn more about her in the remake since I think that will feature Adam’s parents (Chapter 5??)
I mean, we don’t really know Enchantress that well atm, except that she apparently tests people and she punishes those who failed and rewards ones that succeed. And she is actually from Belle’s world (or at least she visits it enough), unlike Grimhilde’s witch disguise in Aurora’s world. So, who knows? This really could be Enchantress ^^
That’s true that this is her home world. But we also found out that the Fairy Godmother is really the Blue Fairy who is really Cinderella’s mom so I wouldn’t put it past there being a twist with the Enchantress. Especially now that we know that Adam’s parents will appear and visit Belle and Adam. There must be some explanation as to why his parents were missing from their son’s childhood and from the movie and maybe it’s got a connection with the Enchantress.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Enchantress is also the fairy from the tale, Diamonds and Toads, who basically tests a kind girl and a not so kind girl by asking for a drink of water from the well. To the kind girl, she appears as a poor old woman, to her unkind stepsister, a beautiful noblewoman. The tale is also French in origin and sure enough, here’s the Enchantress asking Ariel for some water.
I think the authors said on their Tumblr a long time ago that Diamonds and Toads is one of their favorite fairy tales and will be included in this comic so maybe this is the same Enchantress. It’s funny because way back in the 50s or 60s, Disney had a big storybook of fairy tales. For every new story they hadn’t adapted before, they would recast the characters with their movie characters (like Grumpy played Rumpelstiltskin) and they used Drizella and Anastasia for Diamonds and Toads.
I love Diamonds and Toad, aka, the kind and unkind girls fairy tale trope. That recasting of new fairytales with familiar characters reminds me of the Magic Cloak being retold with Minnie and Mickey or Donald and his nephews in the Magic Stick.
I used to own a storybook where the Mickey characters played the story of Rapunzel. Minnie was Rapunzel, Mickey her prince, Clarabelle was Gothel, and Donald and Daisy were Rapunzel’s parents. I wish Disney would do more stuff like that now especially since I have zero interest in any of their new characters.
Ariel is setting herself up for a very dark future, IMO. Carmilla’s destiny is to be with Rose Red/Snow White, and when Ariel will find out her love is unrequited, she will die of a heartbreak.
Well, that would be fitting, considering Hans Christian Andersen was in love with a man, and The Little Mermaid fairytale was nothing but his secret love declaration to him.
Edvard Collin was Hans’ friend and one-sided love interest. Edvard was unable to reciprocate his feelings and their friendship was never quite the same after. He and his wife did agree to Hans’ final wishes of being buried together with him. Though that was only for a time.
Her love for Carmilla. Ariel has fallen in love with her, but Carmilla is nothing but a part of Snow White who was created when Snow committed suicide in one of her past livves after finding Rose Red dead (apparently, Rose Red dies every time she and Snow are about to be reunited). Carmilla’s fate is probably to become a part of Snow White again, and we all know the true love of Snow White is Rose Red, meaning Ariel is nothing but Carmilla’s pastime until she can be with her true love again. On top of that, Carmilla is only attracted to Ariel because of her red hair, which remind her of Rose.
Carmilla is half Snow White though and half Rose Red so she’s just as likely to become part of Rose Red again or split into two halves and each half goes back to the two sisters rather than fully merging with only Snow White.

I actually always assumed that Ariel got that trident through Undine as I believe Undine at one point appears to Ariel sometime during that adventure through a dream, telling her to be one with the sea before she ends up coming to Belle’s rescue.I do love that it’s actually the Enchantress who provides Ariel with the trident and that she does so through a test of compassion. Also, I love her redesign for both her forms.

I have a theory regarding the particular nature of Ariel’s world, especially when it comes to mermaids. If we look closely, and according to what Tristan says, it seems that in this world mermaids need magical intervention in order to return to land. As we go further into the chapters, we also see that mermaids possess the ability to defend themselves: the fairy who appears to Ariel a few chapters later restores this ability, allowing her to summon the trident to defend herself.
More generally, I have the impression that the worlds of most of our princesses require external magic in order to progress. For instance, we can look at Cinderella’s world with the presence of her Fairy Godmother, or Aladdin’s world with the Genie of the lamp. More importantly, if we look closely, these are worlds in which relics appear. I believe that the presence of these relics, in certain worlds, weakens—or at least limits—the protagonists’ ability to act. It is a theory that, I admit, still needs further support, but it is certainly worth discussing.

In the tumblr the authors said:Not her only part, but she doesn’t have a big role either.

Wow, true, very Andersen Little Mermaid vibe
