The art keeps getting prettier. Jasmine and Yum Yum are so cute here!

I really like the touch of Yum-Yum’s nails being turquoise like Jasmine’s outfit versus Jasmine’s nails being purple like Yum-Yum’s outfit! I can almost imagine them doing each other’s nails.
While I can see the improvement in this page, I must admit I preferred the old outfits. Although, since Breadfly is no longer involved in the comic and outfits were kinda her thing (?) there are outfits you can’t use anymore.
Well, I actually think the previous outfit was problematic, and this one is a big improvement. Honestly, Breadfly’s designs always felt a bit too over-the-top to me. I remember Jasmine’s earlier outfit being overly ornate and full of clashing elements. I also noticed an exaggerated use of jewelry—especially pearls, hundreds and hundreds of them. I never quite understood the color palette either. Jasmine didn’t even wear yellow in her original outfit, and yet in that redesign, yellow was the main color. I was also disappointed that they covered her up way too much—was the artist maybe a fan of the live-action version?
I feel that when they’ve done redesigns related to dresses (like Cinderella’s, or Jasmine’s red outfit), they’ve taken the base design and either improved it or made it more fitting to a historical context. In the case of that previous Jasmine outfit, I didn’t see any of that. It felt like they threw a bunch of things together to hide an outfit the artist didn’t actually like. The only connection it had to the original was the color, and even that got drowned out by the overwhelming amount of yellow.
In the current one, I see more of an attempt to take the base outfit and turn it into a kind of “deluxe version.” I still think the two other redesigns I mentioned (Cinderella and red Jasmine) are more refined and closer to a “perfect” redesign, but this one is definitely more on the right path to being a deluxe version of the original than the previous attempt. Or at least that’s how I see it!
I imagine there are probably more fans of Breadfly’s designs, but honestly, with the changes I’ve been seeing, I prefer Sonne’s vision. It’s funny, but maybe we could start calling these dresses the “Sonne’s Version” — like they do with Taylor Swift’s re-recordings? XD
I personally like Breadfly’s over the top outfits. They feel high end, designer. On the contrary, the tulle sleeves and “skirt” on Jasmine’s new outfit feel toy-like, like something a Barbie doll would wear – and so does Yum Yum’s jacket. The shape of Jasmine’s waistline also looks weird. But I respect your opinion.

Thank you for your honesty. I see this as a good opportunity to clarify how the creative process used to work. I didn’t usually have much say in most of the designs Breadly wanted for specific situations. But in this particular page, the idea was to recreate Jasmine’s original blue outfit, and she came up with this design. https://gyazo.com/b33c3f9f00a7f2e9562e643d99d1760e
The interpretation of these designs on the page was entirely up to me, as I fully illustrated each page myself. In this one, the color palette and embroidery details of the outfits are my work. Breadly added the four kilos of pearls to both characters—an element she generally overused, along with the “bra-shaped” necklines, which I’ve gradually been removing.
The goal in changing this page was to stay truer to the original shapes of Jasmine’s clothing, because it wasn’t even recognizable. I’m doing something similar with the classic dress for Aurora (which Breadly designed) and Cinderella’s ball gown (which I designed myself, and even so, I’ve wanted to make it more faithful in certain key elements). I’m glad you found the original designs more couture or high fashion, but I’m not comfortable with them. Also it’s not like I couldn’t keep using Breadfly’s designs, they’re not copyrighted (and most of them were heavily based on already existing designs from internet lol), and honestly she herself cannot care less for this project all along. But I surely need to adapt old elements I no longer like (or never liked in the first place) into something that follows my own criteria, even if you find it more doll-like now 🤔
It’s nice to hear we’re getting much more faithful designs of their classic dresses, since they’re still timeless and iconic. It’s really great to see Jasmine’s signature turquoise outfit back as well!
I’m also really excited to see the redesign of Aurora’s classic Blue and Pink dress. Though it’s a bit sad to hear Cinderella’s ballgown will be redesigned again, since I personally think the current design is really good homage to both historical accuracy and her original 50s glamour.
In high fashion design products, there’s usually extremely precise control over every detail. One design rule is that sometimes, less is simply more. Overall, I still think Breadfly is often guilty of this in their designs. They’re excessive with digital rhinestones, patterns, etc. My point is that being excessive doesn’t have to be a bad thing, but even to be excessive, you need to have control over what you’re doing. I truly don’t want to be harsh toward one of the former artists, but if I have to judge their work, I see some questionable designs being presented as “better versions” of the originals. I think this dress, a previous yellow one for Belle, and the classic blue Aurora one are good examples of that. Rewatching episode one, that neckline on Aurora still really throws me off. Wow. Now I really wish I had a comparison of the before and after versions by Sonne so I could analyze things further!
I don’t see anything odd about Jasmine or Yumyum! Are you referring to their anatomical designs or to their dresses? I’ve never really been able to compare each artist’s anatomy because it’s never been clear to me when exactly Breadfly was doing the actual drawing, beyond some covers or the deleted mythology from the canceled Arista special.
And by the way, no worries at all! I completely understand that we can have different opinions, and I truly respect yours as well. Honestly, it was starting to get a bit boring seeing everyone agree all the time—it’s nice to have some variety in perspectives!
I will change those Belle and Aurora dresses for sure since I’m already not using the old ones on the covers for chapter 1 and 4.5. About the anatomy in general, I’ve drawn all the pages from the very beginning. Breadfly would work sometimes in backgrounds and a few covers 🙂
I prefer Sonne’s design tbh, it’s simpler but more effective, is light and airy and honestly in the original movie the light blue outfit never really stood out to me as it being intentionally comparable to other princesses dresses, the purple wedding dress did feel much more princessy, even Jafar’s slave red outfit felt more “royalty” than the light blue dress.
In the case of the top and pants I just feel like it’s something Jasmine would wear by choice, not because of it being expected of her society. She evens wears day the day Prince Ahmed comes to ask her hand, meaning she really doesn’t care at all.
I feel like even if Jasmine felt trapped in her palace her top and pants were a statement, a representation of her wanting to express herself. Obviously in the movie it looks like that just to be easier to draw but it still makes sense to Jasmine as a character.
This version just feels right, Jasmine is a girl who has all the luxuries she could ask for but she doesn’t care about them after all, in the case of her purple wedding dress and her slave dress it made sense for them to be more embellished and complex, just like they look in TLCT, but the blue outfit was never intended to be luxurious, Breadfly’s version just felt like a new dress in my opinion, not an homage to the original one.
If all dresses and outfits were made with the intention of being luxurious and complex, then the actual intentionally wow factor dress wouldn’t make much of a difference, there needs to be a balance.
It’s easy to get dazzled by something full of sparkles and textures, but that doesn’t make it good design. The only thing that actually works is the drawing underneath — and that’s always done by Sonne. Calling Breafly’s designs high end or designer is bold, considering what she puts on each character. She dresses them in outfits that don’t represent who they are and are oversaturated with stuff. Repeating the same design elements again and again on completely different characters just shows a lack of understanding of both the characters and basic design logic.
If you check her Instagram, you’ll see the dresses are cluttered, unbalanced, and chaotic. Throwing a bunch of stuff on a dress doesn’t make it designer — it just makes it look cheap. You might like what she does, but that doesn’t mean her designs are actually good.
On the other hand, it’s pretty clear you don’t know much about Barbie, who has actually worked with real designers. And calling Jasmine a Barbie just because she’s wearing a balanced, aesthetic outfit that makes sense for what it’s meant to be, works as an upgraded version of her original dress, and fits her world — sounds more like a compliment than an insult.
And one thing to keep in mind: every time you like a dress in the comic, it’s because Sonne drew it. It’s not about how much is thrown on top — it’s about someone who actually knows how to design, draw, and understand the characters.
I wasn’t trying to insult Jasmine indeed. I called her outfit – mind you, not her character – Barbie-like precisely because I don’t think it fits her world. When I think of Middle Eastern fashion, i think of more ornate outfits, that’s all.

Gorgeous redesigns! When I first saw the original page I didn’t know who Princess Yum Yum was. It wasn’t until years later that I saw the Thief and the Cobbler (Recobbled) so now I appreciate her cameo all the more.
Absolutely gorgeous 🩷
I like the redesign here

Okay, I just have to ask… who decided to make Philip’s hair blonde? XD
Me. He was already blonde as a kid and dark blonde as an adult so…
That was a great call! He looks much better now and stands out more from Evil Phillip.

Same! This page was actually the reason why I looked up Yum Yum and discovered about the existence of the Thief and the Cobbler!
It’s even funnier when you realize the crazy history between this movie and Aladdin too. Jasmine and Yum Yum are pretty much the same character. xD
