What I understand here is that Ursula does know Ariel isn’t in love, but she lies to Tristan so he won’t interfere with her plan, since he wasn’t able to see the abyssal spell on Eric.
Or maybe Ariel, at that moment, was really in love with Eric, but Eric’s feelings were false because of the mermaid’s spell. So even if they had kissed each other, it would not have worked.
I like how what we’re seeing doesn’t DENY or change what have happened in the original film, it only expands its story, working around the seams.
Although, yeah, i would like to see how this overhaul will work with the original ending, specially with Tristan and Arista being aware of what’s going on.
If I remember correctly, Ursula mentioned that Arista was her last “visitor” to see her before her death at the hands of Eric. So my guess is at some point before that occurs, she’s going to end up seeing Ursula once more regarding her sister’s deal with her.
